FAQ
Q: What are steel fibers?
A: Steel fibers are thin filaments of steel often used for their high tensile strength and abrasive properties.
Q: What is Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete? (SFRC)?
A: Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete is concrete mixed with fine and coarse aggregates or steel fibers with increased tensile strength, structural capacity and ductility as compared to traditional/conventional concrete. Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete provides discontinuous reinforcement and effective crack control.
Q: What are the properties of concrete improved by steel fibers?
A: A few key attributes of concrete improved by steel fibers can be highlighted as :
  • Increased flexural strength.
  • Extreme fatigue resistance
  • Greater impact resistance
  • Less porous
  • More effective composition against abrasion and spalling
  • Elimination of shrinkage cracks
  • Excellent resistance to corrosion.
Q: How do Steel Fibers work?
A: When added to the concrete mixture, steel fibers enhance many of concrete's mechanical characteristics like toughness, durability and tensile strength. It also helps in eliminating shrinkage cracks.
Q: How does SFRC lower costs over the installation life?
A: SFRC is cost efficient, depending on the quantity and complexity of reinforcement in traditional design. Steel fibers enhance toughness, durability and tensile strength reduces maintenance over the installations life, thus reducing the project cost.
Q: Do steel fibers affect the slump of concrete?
A: When steel fibers are added in higher concentration it results in an apparent loss as measured by the slump test. Hence, a super plasticizer should be be added to increase the slump 1-2" greater than the final desired target slump.
Q: What is the difference between synthetic and steel fibers?
A: Synthetic fibers help only to control plastic shrinkage cracking in early stages while Steel fibers enhances strength and durability by reinforcing the concrete in its hardened state. Another prominent difference between steel and synthetics is their respective Youngs modulus and tensile yield strength. Steel fibers offer high modulus of elasticity and tensile strength to assume excess strain across a crack and hold it tightly.
Q: What is the word Shortcrete refer to ?
A: Shotcrete refers to a highly fluid type of concrete which can be sprayed onto almost any surface. These liquid concrete are generally reinforced with steel fibers to increase its cohesion during application.
Q: What are the fields of application ?
A: Highways & roadways, shotcrete in mining/tunneling, explosive and impact resistance structures, industrial floorings etc.
